Vadstena Castle Where History Sings. Vadstena Castle was built in 1545 by King Gustav I as a fortress to protect Stockholm from Danish invaders approaching from the south. The king married his third wife, Catherine Stenbock, here in 1552 before the fortress had been converted into a habitable castle. Vadstena Castle is a Renaissance castle from the 16th century which is beautifully situated in the center of Vadstena with moats around. We have visited the castle during the day both with and without guided tours and in the evening, during their ghost walk. Vadstena Slott was built between 1545 and 1620 by order of King Gustav Wasa in Vadstena (Östergötlands Län) on Vättern as a moated castle.
